What’s Going On…November 26th Update

On June 23, 2025, the Board of Directors of the Adventure Cycling Association (ACA) listed the organization’s headquarters at 150 E. Pine Street in Missoula, Montana for sale. A small group composed of ACA’s founders, two former executive directors, and several past staff and board members informed the Board that Montana state law required a vote of the membership before such a key asset could be sold.
That vote began on November 3rd, and has now been completed. However, we again needed to inform the board that the way the vote was run appears to violate several Montana statutes. A letter was sent to the current president of the Board on November 21st, 2025, outlining the ways membership rights were undercut in the voting procedure.
On this page are two links. The first is to the letter Save ACA sent to the Board. The second link is to a document titled Adventure Cycling: Rebuilding For The Next 50 Years. This document, developed by Save ACA members, outlines various solutions to the challenges currently faced by the organization, was sent to the Board on August 16, 2025. It also generated no comment from the Board.
The Adventure Cycling headquarters belongs to all members. It was built, improved, and sustained by members and supporters who believed in the organization’s mission. A decision of this magnitude demands full membership input.
The building and renovations were paid for by Life Members, large donors and the ACA membership at large. It belongs to this worldwide community.
A Flood of Letters to the Board
“I am compelled to go against my nature to express a deep sadness upon hearing of the potential sale of Adventure Cycling’s home office at 150 E Pine St.” -- Daniel Mrgan, former ACA Staff member | Click the image to read Daniel's Letter to the Board
“This quote from your email newsletter broke my heart and baffled me:
“We are not bringing in enough new members because Adventure Cycling’s brand is perceived as older and pavement-centric and our programming is not well aligned with growing bike travel types (e.g. gravel, trail) and event trends (e.g. meet-ups and bike summits).”
Perceived? So what are you doing about it?” -- Linda Balmer, ACA Member
“I was astonished to learn yesterday through an email forwarded to me by a former Adventure Cycling tour leader that the Board of Directors plans to put the organization’s headquarters at 150 E. Pine up for sale.” -- Gary MacFadden, former executive director, Bikecentennial/Adventure Cycling Association | Click the image to read Gary's full letter
It appears that you are selling off an ASSET in order to cover EXPENSES. That on the face of it is not sound financial decision-making. Those of us who have some level of expertise in real estate investment understand the long-term value that commercial and residential real property affords, and how leveraging it can buttress an entity during difficult times. Real assets should be used to generate income to cover expenses, not liquidated in order to cover them. What typically happens in a scenario that you have laid out in this plan to sell the building is that the assets just get burned up, and their leverage is lost forever." -- Cynthia Steiner

“We are even more dismayed to know that this was decided, even though Adventure Cycling is not facing a cash crunch and has enough resources for the near future.” -- ACA Founders and Former ACA Staff Leadership | Click the image to read their full letter to the Board
